Building an Effective Coaching Strategy

Paper from: Jan 2016

Introduction:

In the dynamic world of rugby, success on the field often hinges on a coach’s ability to assess a game accurately and relay essential insights to the team. In my research of how Caribbean rugby plays at a high level competition  I analysed Barbados (Caribbean/Rugby Americas North-RAN) play against Chile(South America/ Southern American Rugby-SAR) in a World seven series qualifier in 2014. The key aspects of assessing a rugby match and translating valuable information to the players to build a strong coaching strategy in a short amount of time is something to consider in the game of 7s. In a game of 15-a-side you have roughly 15minutes to get your message across whereas in 7s you only have 2mins. Ultimately this is mental training for me to really get my message across effectively and thus allow the players to have simple messages which extend to the whole game.

Analyzing the Game:

Rugby is a complex sport that demands a multifaceted approach at high intensity when you watching the game live. In review the game can be given more time assessment. To create a winning strategy, coaches must meticulously analyze the game from various angles and identify what aspects you have trained that can help the players in the moment correct the mistakes:

  • Kicking and Play Duration: Longer play and strategic kicking can significantly impact the game’s flow. Coaches should assess how transitions from attack to defense occur and identify patterns in kicking strategies.
  • Counterattack Opportunities: Recognizing when the opposition lacks pressure and identifying moments to counterattack can lead to game-changing plays. A coach must highlight these opportunities for the team.
  • Physicality in Attack: The importance of physicality in the attack cannot be underestimated. Coaches should focus on building aggression in the offensive plays and emphasizing effective ball retention.
  • Tackling Technique and Confidence: Commitment to tackles and tackling techniques can influence the opponent’s confidence. Coaches need to identify instances where players are not committing fully and work on improving tackling techniques.
  • Urgency and Strategic Play: Urgency is crucial, but players need to balance it with strategic decision-making. Coaches should discuss the importance of urgency in specific game situations and maintaining structure.Urging the team to play with urgency while maintaining composure is essential. Highlight moments of urgency and address any signs of pressure or hesitation.
  • Handling Skills: Handling skills are fundamental in rugby. Coaches must emphasize the significance of solid handling to maintain possession and execute plays effectively.
  • Set Pieces: A strong set-piece game can provide a platform for attack. Coaches should assess line integrity, positioning, and coordination during set pieces, ensuring the team maximizes these opportunities.
  • Tactical Adaptation: Discuss any changes in tactics based on the first half’s performance. Address weaknesses, potential areas for counterattack, and the need to stick to the game plan.
  • Handling and Decision-Making: Remind the team of the importance of handling skills and making accurate decisions under pressure.
  • Commitment to Tackles: Reinforce the need for committed tackles and how they impact the opponent’s confidence.
  • Structural Discipline: Emphasize the importance of maintaining the team’s structure in set pieces and other tactical scenarios.

Half-Time Reflections:

The half-time break is a crucial moment for coaches to address the team. In a limited timeframe, coaches must discuss key points that require immediate attention but also ensure that you cover enough to identify points that can change the game.how many key points can a fatigue player take? How many issues that you have a solution for from training have you coached and how many issues have you not coached that need a solution in the game?

Conclusion:

Effective coaching involves meticulous game assessment and strategic communication with the team. By analyzing various aspects of the game, from kicking strategies to tackling techniques, coaches can pinpoint areas for improvement. Half-time reflections provide an opportunity to reinforce key concepts and adapt tactics. Ultimately, a successful coach translates these insights into a cohesive strategy, guiding the team to victory with confidence, discipline, and determination.
